V-Day

At TMEA in San Antonio with the folks. Convention was great, different, but good. Heard lots of great concerts and a few good clinics. Enjoyed the exhibits and got some great resources that Steffanie and I will put to use next week.

This is my 2nd v-day completely alone and I was not really bothered by it at all. Don't know if that is because I never really had a good one, or that I realize that this day is just another day.....
Sure it would be nice to get a card or flowers, but I am loved and those thing fade. The love of family, friends, and my father Jesus Christ are the most important and do not change.

Happy Valentines!

Prizes for Boys

I am amazed at what kids will do for a prize. Boys choir is a challenge!!!! Every day is different. We have 6-8 grade boys all together mid afternoon. Their skill levels range from terrible, beginners, advanced, and some really talented singers. Boys are so different from girls and are harder to motivate. Today we gave away some really cool college shirts that the kids get to wear every three weeks on Friday with jeans. We told the guys that we were going to pick four of the best singers with great posture, hand signs, vowels, etc. WOW! it was the best looking boys choir all year. IT was so strange, but also exciting. If they could be that focused and hard-working everyday they would be unstoppable. UIL would be a breeze and I would send in a CD!!!

After this class we both said, "we got to get more prizes"
What would be some good things to continue to motivate the boys?
We have used stickers, pencils, girly crowns, shirts, gift certificates.

I wish that intrinsic motivation worked with boys and girls in MS, but I am not sure that they are mature enough to understand and have the character to do the right thing for no reward.

School News

We have a principal, almost two weeks to the date that the assistant sup. told us they were interviewing. He is a young AA male with 15 years experience in education, but I think only one full year as a AP and he has never been a head principal. I am trying to keep an open mind, but it is really hard. We will meet him on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd and then his first offical day is Thursday, Feb. 5th.
As my mother always says, "keep your head down, mouth shut, and do your job"
If I stay in my room and just teach choir things are great. As in any business place there is so much drama, politics, gossip, and love triangles. I refuse to get caught up in all that. I was hired to teach choir and invest in the lives of teenagers. "I will be set apart"

January Verses

Isaiah 33:6
He is your constant source of stability; He abundantly provides safety and great wisdom; He gives all this to those who fear Him.

2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.

Jesus Year

As I have dubbed this a "Jesus Year" and as I try to focus only on Christ things get harder. It is a combination of the devil and my strong will.
Change is hard and does not come fast. Reading God's word daily, memorizing scripture, attending church/bible study, controlling my tongue, relationships, the list goes on....... are all things I am working on.
Making this a Jesus Year also involves my thought life. What is really important? Will it matter in five years? Does it make a difference in eternity? In a world that has become fast and all about self it hard not to become like everyone else.
We are called to be "set apart" and in come days it is going to become more important. How do I set myself apart with out isolating myself?

Weekend

Mom is in-town to see Schoonie and have a visit with me. I have Monday off for MLK and have taken Tuesday off because of the inauguration. So mom and I have lots of time to spend together. Yesterday on her way to the doctor her car was side-swiped by a hit and run. The car is not that badly damaged, but it made for a very stressful day for her. We went to Barryhill for dinner and had a great time. Them came home read and went to bed. I was tired and have major congestion in my chest. I am hoping to go to some cool places to eat, catch a movie, and maybe go to the museum. Well see.....

I doing research for cool places to eat I asked some people that I work with for suggestions. People that have lived in Houston all of their lives and love to eat. Here is some of what I got.

Most of them are inside the loop, which is great, but I am sure that there is fun and great food to be found outside of the loop. That may be another posting/mission.

  1. Tafi
  2. Onion Creek
  3. Rainbow Lodge
  4. Tony's Mexican Restaurant
  5. Barnaby's Cafe
  6. Baba Yega
  7. Pronto Cucinino
  8. Rioja
  9. Thai Pepper
  10. The Chocolate Bar
  11. Collina's
  12. Mia Bella
  13. Good Company Seafood
  14. The Hobbit Hole Cafe
  15. Ziggy's
  16. Rickshaw
  17. Dharma Cafe
  18. Empire Cafe
  19. Michelangelo's
  20. Black Walnut Cafe
  21. D'Amico's
  22. Kubo's Japanese Sushi

More to come. If you have suggestions please post.

Change is Gonna Come

School has been an interested ball of wax lately. Our principal resigned before Christmas, which to some was a good thing and to others was bad. I think it was a good thing for all. My principal was a smart young AA woman with two young children and a husband that also has a carrer. This new job will allow her to make more money and be home with her family more. We were led to believe both by her and other members of the A-team both before break and after break that the leadership and direction of the school would rest in the hands of the leaders that were already at the school and new it well. On Wed of last week someone from Central Admin. came over and stated that they were interviewing and it could be as soon as two weeks or May when someone was placed as our new principal. Karen was named lead admin, Mary was named in charge of all CI and Gary will "round out the triangle". We were ALL (includeing the a-team) shocked and not pleased. What I saw happen in the next seven school days was hard and sad. Some cloose friends, who are leaders and teachers were crying, yelling, walkin' out of school, talking about quitting, fighting with others on the staff, talking about others, and becoming apathatic. Well.....

Yesterday was a half-day and at the end of the half-day there was a Jerry Maguire meeting or for those of us that are not huge movie buffs a "Come to Jesus Meeting" and it was led by the rounder of the trinangle, who is a great speaker and leader. Many left feeling yelled at, or the hammer falling on them. I left feeling good and excited about the Change that is Gonna Come! Something the Lord has really been teaching me over the last three year in paticular is that you MUST acept the things that you can't change and work on what you can change. You are responsible for you, not what ANYone else does or doesn't do. That is so hard to really believe and live out, especially when you see injustice, wrong doing, or you know you could do a better job.

I hope that what this means is that we are going to have a school run by professionals that care and will do what they belive is right until the Lord places someone else in a position of leadership over them. "I do not know what tomorrow holds, but I will put my faith in the one who does"

Jesus Year

Monday and Tuesday have been busy and filled with the unexpected!

On Monday, Steffanie and I started a new program in our classroom in self-defense. So much of our day, because of the number of students that we teach is spent policing the rules. Rules that are important, but don't apply to music. Tuck your shirt in, put your ID on, be on time in your seat when the bell rings, take off that jacket, no gum, etc. When we added it up (and I am sure this is an under-estimate) we have spent over 6 hours in the last 17 weeks repeating ourselves instead of teaching music. The system is to hard to explain here, in short it is the ideas from several different good teachers with Steffanie's and my twist on it. Boy, we were not expecting to have such an impact. Monday was hard, but better than we expected. Tuesday, we were met with less resistance and taught more music and had more fun because of it. THE PASSION, Creativity and Dedication that Steff and I have is spreading. We had no intention of getting recognition, praise, or starting a school-wide system, which is what may be taking place after the word spreading in just two short days. We are just two teachers that want to make a difference not only in our content, but in the ethical, moral, and character of the students that we teach. A great start to what I want to be a JESUS YEAR.

Tonight, a new Beth Moore bible study started and the topic is "The Inheritance". The music was great, I saw a college friend that sings in the praise team, which was cool and yet again I was taught and brought to JESUS by this faithful woman. I could write pages about what was said, the jokes, my thought, verses..... I will only say this "The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance" Psalm 16:6

In a previous post I spoken of KSBJ's "One Thing" challenge and my prayer that the Lord would lead me to my one thing. I am feeling a theme or direction, but need to pray and ponder more before I "put it in stone" so to speak on this blog.

I am excited to see what the rest of the week holds. Riding instead of driving is hard for me. If I can let go and tilt my head back and allow God to drive, it will be one wild and crazy ride.

One Thing

KSBJ is asking their listeners to change "One Thing". I guess this is instead of making useless resolutions that are broken as soon as they are made . The idea is to think of that one thing that you have always wanted to do or change FOR GOOD! Then spend the entire year focusing on that one thing.

Not sure that I can do this. Praying for the Lord to lead me to my one thing. I don't want it to be frivolous, but at the same time not something lofty and unattainable.

This week I had my Varsity Choir Girls do a similar exercise, but with 5 things. I asked them to list 5 things to improve/goals for their personal character development, 5 things they want to do or accomplish, and 5 goals for our choir. I have not read them, but I hope that some of them took it to heart and put some thought into it. I never ask my students to do anything that I would not do myself so here goes:

Character:
1. grow my capacity to love as Christ loves
2. control my mouth- gossip, judgments, yelling, etc.
3. enlarge my territory
4. stop embellishing, exaggerating, lying in any form (this will be hard for the story-telling diva)
5. develop relationships built on Christ's love and character

Things I want to Accomplish
1. Read 20-30 books this year
2. take more pictures, especially of family
3. spend time with family and friends
4. lose 40 pounds
5. grow my hair out some more

Choir Goals
1. Personal relationship with every student
2. UIL Sweepstakes
3. Transition/Future
4. Quality not Quanity
5. More Socials/Fun/Relationship Building Activities

I wonder what other people's "One Thing" is or there goals. I am afraid that many people float through life without growing; spiritually, mentally, physically, or in relationships. They have accepted the status quo and feel as if this is all that life can be or will be. I REFUSE to be one of those people and pray that they get a clue.......

Meet The Family

For my 25th Birthday I got two cats. They are sisters from the Hill Country.

On the top we have Elena and on the bottom is Tosca. Both are named after Sopranos in famous Operas. These cats have been great. They travel well, can be left alone for extended periods of time, and get along with each other. I never thought I would want another pet. But, the Lord had other plans. In March of 2005, around Easter time the Lord brought little Mimi into my life. I tried to get her adopted but.... moved to Houston with her. We became best friends. The cats and Mimi get along for the most part. Tosca and her play, but Elena doesn't like her at all. I had no idea in March of '05 that my life would be turned upside down and having a little friend would get me through and keep me safe.

I am working on training Mimi to run agility races. She is so fast, smart, and can jump really high. It is very expensive and she does not have papers, so it will be mostly for fun, but keeps us on our toes. Everyone should have a BFF even if it is a dog.

Pondering

So much is going through my head today. Lots to do and trying to find a balance is very hard. How do you stand firm, yet not be judgmental or mean?
How do you grow you character with out hurting yourself or others in the process?
Do you every really know where you stand with another human? So many of us say or do one thing and think or feel another. (who are your real friends)

Finding a new life, a better life is hard.
I have so much growing and learning left to do, but at the same time I feel the Lord moving me toward action through and during that growth. One could spend their whole life learning, studying, growing and never really lived, loved, or served. I don't want to miss out......

UIL is in 45 rehearsal days!!!!!!! That is so little time.
Good news is before UIL I am going to TMEA (mini vacation in San Antonio) and Branson with the Folks.

Scripture Memory

I grew up memorizing scripture. When we were at FBC Orlando, Art Murphy was the children's minister and he created a graded scripture memory system that grew with the child. Similar to what is used in Awana's now. I being the overachiever that I am completed all 7 levels and still have the certificated and plaques to prove it. After 6th grade I became very involved in Acteens, which is an extension of GA's for youth. In that program there was also scripture memory. None of that is really the point, just back history. After HS I have not memorized much scripture. I was wondering why it is that for the first 16 years or so of my life this was a high priority and the next 14 or so...... it has not been.

Many of the scriptures that I learned are lost, or at least their address is. I started to become aware of how little I knew or still had memorized when I started attending the Beth Moore Bible Study live at FBC Houston. She not only knows the word, but she can quote quite a bit of it. Then right around Christmas I got the email invite to the upcoming bible study, which led me to her blog. ALL GOD!!!! Beth is challenging ladies to learn two scriptures a month of their choice or they can learn the one she is. Don't want to ruin it for you, read all about it yourself. It is amazing. All the people banning together to hid God's word in their heart's. Check it out!

On another note, the 100% gluten-free resolution is going very well. It is so hard. So many things that you can't have. I started out a year and half ago on this new journey and the first six months I did really good, but after that I started cheating and it just went down hill from there. No matter how hard it is I must do this for my mental and more importantly physical health.
Great blog that makes gluten-free cooking, eating, and living look colorful and doable.

By the way UT WON!!!!!!

365 project

Here in Houston I have fallen in love with KSBJ. http://www.ksbj.org/ When I lived the in DFW area there was a great Christian radio station that I loved and never thought I would find a better station, but...... KSBJ has great DJ's that share personal stories that I can relate too. Two of the female DJ's feel like close friends even though I have never met them. Susan and Liz are great! KSBJ also does not have commercials! They are completely listener supported. Often I have not liked listening to radio stations because they talk to much, play the same songs every hour, play mostly men and bands when I love women singers. KSBJ falls into these traps sometimes, but makes up for it by the prayer, scripture reading, special guests, free brown bag concerts, and funny clean jokes.

Liz Jordan is the afternoon host and a young spunky girl in Houston. She has a great blog and is doing this cool project with photo's.

Not sure if I could do this, but it is a really cool idea. I love pictures, not many in my family do. So it seems like I am the one taking the pictures and never in them. Many of my friends (being artists) are into photography and good at it. It is an expensive hobby and I can't even find my cable......

Home Again, Home Again.....

Got back to Houston yesterday. Spent today unpacking, cleaning, reading the mail, checking emails, boring yet necessary stuff.

There are so many little projects that I want/need to do, but rest and relaxation seem so much more important right now. I want this semester to be less stressful than the fall, to work less hours so that I can have more time more myself and those projects.

Not that anyone cares what these projects are, but if I post them here I will remember them and maybe get them accomplished. (ADHD)

work on a scrapbook
organize my CD collection
sell a bunch of stuff on CL
update my DVD library spreadsheet (I know I'm a nerd)
shred and file bills/important papers
work on my illustrated cookbook and journal
frame artwork and family pictures
(that is enough for now)

I was going to post some pictures here and on Craig's list but alas I can't find the cable for my camera. Hoping that it is at school in my office.

Sites I was looking at today, thought I would share:

Friday, January 2, 2009

As the new year begins keeping this blog is a goal of mine. I have started twice, but was not ready to "bare my soul" to the world or myself. I hope to share quotes, ideas, pics, music, links, etc. I want this to be an interactive journal for myself and others.

So let's start today with my goals for 2009

Check out the Houston area museum scene.
Read at least 30 books.
Go to a Rockets game, because I love BB.
Go to an Astros baseball game, since I missed out on all of the 2008 season and have only been to one game.
Eat at a min. of 40 new restaurants.
See a musical, opera, and symphony concert.
exercise 3-5 days a week
take a great vacation
live gluten-free
keep this blog up all year- post at least once a week.
take more pictures and upload them
